Abstract: Romanian literature is, to a large extent, a literature of nomadism. Beyond the romantic figure of the nomadic writer who draws inspiration from travelling the world (the case of Panait Istrati), most forms of nomadism (whether internal or external) are compelled by socio-political factors. While the Soviet period imposed political exile, in the post-Soviet period it is poverty that constitutes the primary cause of exile. Societal mutations and mental transformations become cultural expressions, with a specific topos of dislocation, rupture and identity dramas. Exiled and stateless under communism, Paul Goma wrote literature depicting the human condition distorted by the communist system. Through his art, he portrayed the individual and collective suffering caused by the Securitate, the dictatorship, and genocidal political regimes. His books are a plea for truth, justice, freedom and human dignity. Since 1990, writers such as Constantin Cheianu, Liliana Corobca, Eugenia Bulat, Claudia Partole and Dumitru Crudu have used literature to express the humiliation and despair experienced by Moldovans who have migrated in search of a better life outside the Republic of Moldova due to poverty. These traumatic experiences find a “resonance box” not only in literature, but also in theater and painting, giving profound dramatic meanings to the tribulations of history.
