Abstract: Ethnological research in Chișinău has followed, in broad terms, stages similar to those of the wider scientific and cultural community within this ethnogeographic space, and has been shaped by multiple influences and convergences. The geographically and ideologically marginal status of ethnology in Chișinău has left a clear imprint on both the quality of its content and its research methodology. This article traces the development of folklore studies in Chișinău in order to assess the impact of Slavic influences in the early stages of the discipline, as well as the methodological particularities resulting from these scholarly interactions. The second part of the study examines the evolution of the field under the constraints imposed by party censorship and Soviet propaganda, highlighting content deficiencies generated by the social and political context of the period.

Keywords: folklore studies, ethnology, ethnography, methodology, ideological censorship.
